sixcentz: sixcentz: what do you write?
lady k : I write LADY K. AKA FEVER CAC. In the beginning, I played around with a lot of names like GALAXY GIRL, KAT, B-LIVE. In 1993 I was visiting San Francisco and there was a "Passion piece" on upper Haight Street with an inscription that said "once you enter passions door you will forever be enslaved" and that was what I had and still have ... that feverish passion for Graff.

sixcentz: when did you first start writing?
lady k : I began in 1992 in Vancouver, Canada. Back then I mostly bombed and tagged in the skateboarding parks and streets. By 1996, I finally went out on missions with my crew IL (Independent Ladies) with members WMC and GEMINI.

sixcentz: where you from?
lady k : I grew up in Toronto, Canada. Moved to Vancouver, Canada in 1991. In 1999, I did a painting tour on the West coast and lived and painted in Maui, Hawaii. In 2000, I moved to Montreal Canada. Since 2001, I have split my time living and painting in NYC and Toronto.

sixcentz: who are you down with?
lady k : I am down with CACITY AKA CAC (Crazy Ass Criminals), TLV (The Latin Vandals) and WDS (We Destroy Subways or We Destroy Sh%t.) , WOTS wizards of the styles

sixcentz: who got you into graff?
lady k : NOBODY... I got myself into it by seeing it and then wanting to do it. The neighborhood walls were definitely inspiring ... but for me it was about getting up. I realized I had no real clue to what I was getting into back then, all I knew was that I liked to get up and had mad respect for the pieces that I saw up.

sixcentz: whats your favorite thing to paint?
lady k : I have many favorites......metal walls, trucks, and fr8's, walls, mailboxes and hopefully one day to do a train.

sixcentz: what is your favorite paint/color?
lady k : (True Colourz) Baby Pink, (Montana brand) Lilac, Monoco Blue, Vampire Violetta, Azul Blue, Fever Red, (Krylon) Baby Blue, (Short Cuts) Raspberry and (Molotow), Grapefruit spray paint brands.

sixcentz: who were your influences?
lady k : I have to say ... many. My influences have always been NYC and Canadian writers. Art books, movies, music, fashion, cartoons and this did not always directly have to do with Graffiti. When I started writing I just painted. It was about the process of getting up and getting away with it.

Who was up on walls, trains, trucks and buses. Vancouver had some really nice walls and creativity going on back in the early to mid 90's. At that time I met and started hanging out with ESGR (East Side Graffiti Rollers) in East Vancouver. We all used to snowboard/skateboard together. Then there was the BSM crew which was up on FR8's. This also included writers like TAKE 5,CMOR and JUMBO who had some really wicked wildstyle productions and VIRUS, DEDOS, ZLOLK,DASH 5, NEOS and STEREO.

And also the book "Faith of Graffiti" by Norman Mailer. The writers photographed in there is a history lesson to any writer on how far Graff has come since 1972. Then there is also the documentary "Style Wars" and all the NYC old school writers from the 70's and 80's that I have met.

sixcentz: what do you feel about graffiti today?
lady k : That really depends on how deep you want to get into the scene. I love it. I think that things are messed up as far as it crossing over into the art world ... yes graffiti is art and art can be graffiti ... but why are writers forced to comply to terms like "aerosol art" to be appreciated and recognized. Those words still bastardize graffiti writers. Writers know what they do. They understand the responsibility, so why do we have to change our language to be accepted into the mainstream. It is time that people inside and outside the scene just spoke the truth. Why do we have to keep shaming our culture? It is our right to comment on the world we live in? Whether through words or images.... Are we only allowed to comment if we have money to put up an ad on a billboard inside a train or rent out a gallery space? If life is about freedom of expression. Well, they are going to have to get used to way I like to express myself... and that's through doing Graff!

sixcentz: who do you give props to today?
lady k : I'll start off with PRIZ, STAN1 and DONE from TSF, CAC for being there that day when I was painting in New York. This has changed my path in life. They were the first writers who I REALLY have to thank for not treating me like I was a full of sh%t and taking me serious in what I was doing. LEE, DONDI (rip), LADY PINK , TAKE 5 BA, BSM crew for taking me benching. SANO and WHAT, and all the Cleveland AKA "thieveland" people for having an amazing fresh scene out there. NEON and JASE of BA crew in San Francisco. FUME and all the FONS crew from Dusseldorf, Germany for keeping the trains alive and burning. FOK, GAME from RMA crew in Berlin.

sixcentz: any good stories?
lady k : In 2002, I was painting a wall in Toronto. I had hustled a permission slip from this hardware store. started painting one side of the wall early in the morning but stopped at around 11am to go home and get my camera and more paint to finish the piece.I returned to the wall and a car was parked right in my way. So I went and asked about whose car it was. I was directed to a restaurant so I went in. Some guy told me to sit and wait. Now I began getting nervous. I start to suspect there was a problem eventhough I had a permission slip from the owner. Instead I got the owners wife who starts yelling at me about how ugly and "too Chinese" my piece looked. I explained that I wasn't done yet and that she should wait till I was finished before making any racist comments like that! So I walked out while she was still screaming. I went home and called up PRIZ and he told me to "go back and finish it, flick it and then get out of there before things got really ugly!"

So I went back and as I walked around to the wall. The car was even closer to my piece and now there was white paint where my piece use to be. I was so pissed that I went looking for the owner who had originally given me permission to do my piece. When I found him he apologized and decided to let me paint on the other side of the wall where his wife couldn't see me. His wife seemed to have caused him more problems then he had expected.

So I started painting another piece. His wife must have seen me because all of a sudden a police car pulled up behind me. I showed them my permission slip and they went on their way. Then two minutes later another police car showed up asking the same stupid questions and then they left after the third time of this happening, I had had enough. I explained to the police officer how I had painted this piece and this woman painted over me without "my" permission. This lead to destroying hours of hard work that I had done for free. Believe or not after hearing my story, they went into her restaurant and told her that she was committing an illegal act of vandalism. So as the day progressed any cops that came by to speak to me (that she had obviously called). I sent them into her restaurant to give her "grief." At one point she became so belligerent to the cops that they threaten to arrest for her actions as well as her tone of voice. When I finally completed my piece, I flicked it and to my surprise it is still intact today, but I am looking forward to redoing that wall again just to piss her off some more.

sixcentz: any shout outs?
lady k : PRIZ1, STAN1, DONE and all the TS5, CACITY crew. BE TLV, WDS, JENR8, SANO RTN, CRE8 RTN, FUME and the FONS, FOK and the RMA/Hard2Burn crews, TAKE 5 BSM, QUIRK, SENSR BSM, WMC AKA WHIM, IL crew, WOTS crew, Ruby, Princess A, Dorothy and her family and RISK 47, Thieveland, The Graffiti scene in Vancouver City, T-DOT, MTL.
